Ottawa native Steve Berndt is a professional musician: a singer, trombonist, composer, producer and arranger. Steve has produced five albums of original music with his band The Jivewires and co-produced two more as a member of Rudeboy.
Brian Browne, one of Canada’s truly great jazz pianists, has been a major asset on the Canadian jazz scene for quite some time.
Berndt & Browne have been performing together since 2003 at many gigs in a wide variety of public and private venues in the Ottawa region, including The Ottawa Jazz Festival, Options Lounge at the Brookstreet Hotel, The Stewart Park Festival in Perth, as well as Kingston. Berndt’s 2012 vocal/piano jazz album Déjà Vu features Browne in the Tony Bennett/Bill Evans tradition. The album was named one of 2012’s top jazz albums by Peter Hum in the Ottawa Citizen and was included in the Ottawa Jazz Festival’s 2012 compilation album. In 2014, Steve recorded a “bookend” album called All Over Again that also features Brian Browne. Their new CD’s title completes Yogi Berra’s famous phrase “It’s déjà vu all over again”. All Over Again has joined Déjà Vu on rotation at Tonic, CBC’s national jazz show. Of the second album, Hum (March 28,2014) writes that Berndt “renders his own words, as well as those of the greats, with conviction that outweighs the rare under-enunciated vowel or slightly more mannered singing, while Browne, the dean of Ottawa’s jazz pianists, is his usual sturdy, bluesy, in-the-moment self”. The two album set is currently being considered for review in the L.A. Jazz Times.
