The Carlos Alberto Santana Jazz Quintet is becoming one of the most popular latin jazz groups in Canada’s National Capital Region. Carlos Alberto Santana is an accomplished composer and pianist originally from Mexico City, who migrated to Canada in 1998. The group was originally created in 2014 along with Angel Araos, a Chilean-born percussionist whose career has spanned classical, jazz, folk, Brazilian and Cuban music. In 2015, it was expanded to a quintet. The quintet plays original works with an interesting and dynamic mixture of Latin American rhythms and North American jazz. Last year, the quintet was presented at the National Arts Centre Fourth Stage in a successful sold-out show. This year they released their CD Oye Latino.

Carlos Alberto Santana studied jazz with Juan Jose Calatayud in Mexico and Jan Jarczyk at McGill University in Montreal. He has studied percussion and double bass at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City and composition with Humberto Hernandez Medrano. His major influences are Scott Joplin, Ernesto Lecuona, George Gershwin, Claude Bolling, Michael Camilo, Astor Piazzolla, Mario Luiz, Armengol and Chick Corea.
