Constant Black plays an eclectic mix of non-standard Jazz Standards which spans swing, blues, latin, funk and fusion. You will feel good listening to their interpretations of original, contemporary and older jazz music.
The band’s members come from a variety of backgrounds. Ian "Bucky" Schwartz’s entree to the world of jazz was through the fusion bands of the '70s. David Constant was classically trained on piano and clarinet, doing solo performances and orchestra work, and premiering new works by Canadian composers. He was then bitten by the jazz bug, listening to Chick Corea, Oscar Peterson, Sara Vaughan, Mel Torme, Dave Brubeck, the Winter Consort, Oregon, so he now loves the dynamics and possibilities of playing in a jazz quartet. Bass player Michael Mopas grew up in Scarborough, Ontario, in the late 80’s and early 90’s. The soundtrack of his youth was filled with hip-hop, R&B, soul, house, and reggae. It left a huge impression on him, helping him to shape the person he is today. Valeriy Nehovora has been playing the drums since he was 13 years old. He studied classical percussion at a university-level academy of music in Odessa, but was working on the side as a jazz drummer and in a symphony. While he’s worked a lot in symphony orchestras, what he loves about jazz is the freedom of expression that it allows him.
