The Prime Rib Big Band usually performs as an 11-piece powerhouse ensemble that delivers an eclectic mix of big band swing with soul. For their appearance at MJF, due to challenges related to COVID-19, they will play as a sextet – hence The Prime Rib Short Band – but still deliver their classic sound and Prime Rib sizzle. The repertoire features original material by Ed re-worked by him especially for the festival gig. The band recently released a CD entitled Choice Cuts and to quote leader Ed Lister “we are very proud of the magic we managed to capture in the studio and want to share it with as many people as possible!” The Prime Rib Big Band performed at MJF a few years ago and both the band and the audience had a fantastic time so we are delighted to have them back…fewer in number but might in sound!

Over the three years the band has been active they have performed over fifty shows including MJF, the Ottawa Jazz Festival and the Parc L’Imaginaire festival as well as a highly successful three-year monthly residency at Irene’s Pub. The band draws huge influence from great composers such as Kenny Wheeler, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus to name but a few.
