On Sunday October 18, 2020 at 4:00 PM we are delighted to welcome two familiar faces back to MJF as the Laura Anglade Duo takes the stage at GigSpace.
Both Laura Anglade and Sam Kirmayer have presented concerts at MJF and are two of our most popular and talked-about artists. Having them appear as a duo rather than in the usual larger band configurations we’ve seen at MJF will provide an interesting opportunity to experience their engaging and seemingly effortless musical complicity.

Laura Anglade is a young Montreal-based jazz vocalist currently making a name for herself on the Canadian jazz scene and beyond. Originally from Brousse-Le-Chateau, a small village in the South of France, and raised in Connecticut, she is influenced by her parents’ gypsy jazz and classical backgrounds. Her story-telling interpretations of lesser-known standards and melodic approach to improvisation portray a soul beyond her years. She offers a fresh approach, while attracting a new, younger following to the art form to help keep it flourishing and relevant.
Some of her inspirations include Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Etta Jones, Anita O’Day, Shirley Horn and Blossom Dearie. Laura has performed in numerous jazz festivals, including the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, the Prince Edward County Jazz Festival and Merrickville’s Jazz Fest. She has performed in numerous venues in Montreal as well as in Toronto where she is currently based. Those venues include Diese Onze Jazz Club, concert hall Salle Bourgie as well as a monthly residency at the renowned jazz club, Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill, since June 2017. Anglade has also performed at the Jazz Bistro in Toronto and The Jazz Room in Kitchener.
Laura released her debut album featuring her quintet in June 2019 on Justin Time Records; this was followed by a week-long Southern Ontario tour starting in Montreal as part of the Montreal Jazz Festival followed by performances in Prince Edward County, Merrickville and wrapping up at GigSpace, in Ottawa. The recording has since then been met with international praise by critics and fans alike. Laura was named by Radio Canada’s Ici Musique as “one of the top five female jazz musicians to watch for”.
Please join the concert link ten minutes before the show so that you can leisurely settle in for the event. Or join us for a vocal masterclass with Laura beginning at 2:30 PM.
