At the age of 26, Toronto-based tenor saxophonist and composer Landen Vieira has already emerged as a force to be reckoned with in the Canadian jazz scene. Surrounded by all types of music from an early age, Landen was influenced by classic jazz icons Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Miles Davis. After graduating from the University of Toronto, he started his career playing with bassist Dave Young and Garry Williamson, Robi Botos, David Restivo, and Kevin Turcotte.
“Landen is showing everyone that it is cool to innovate yourself while still honouring the storied traditions of the jazz idiom,” wrote fellow musician, Conrad Gayle, in his blog, The Conrad Report. In reviewing Landen’s debut album, Dream, Conrad Gayle went on to describe it as one of the most stunning debut jazz albums in a long time, “signalling the glorious hope of the future of jazz in Canadian culture.” In this album Landen shows “real depth, emotion, and maturity well beyond his years and his writing has echoes of some of the best composers in jazz, such as Duke Ellington, Bill Strayhorn and Wayne Shorter.”
