Ken McDonald is a hard hitting upright and electric bassist, expressive guitarist and an evocative composer. Born and raised in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, his musical career came to life when he moved to Toronto and started studying music at York University. In 2008 he formed the Ken McDonald Quartet, with the vision of creating music inspired by a colourful array of influences.
And that is exactly what this ensemble has been doing ever since – whether on tour, at concert venues or when recording: Their first recording, Pay What you Can, (2011) was described as “a soul-filled and joyous ride, that swings from the deep funk sounds of New Orleans, into the intense modern jazz territory and all the way over to the meditative Arabic sound of North Africa.” (Dave Clark, Gemini award-winning composer and leader of the Woodchoppers Association). And the group’s second album, Sitting, Waiting, Wasting Time (2015), exemplifies the “highly informed yet searching nature of much of the music being heard from a new generation of jazz musicians. Schooled in tradition, they bring a host of their own influences, (and) a sound that is instantly relatable and identifiable” (Ted Quinlan, The Whole Note)
