Cachaça – Thursday October 15 @ 7:30 PM

New Cachaça Promo Photo

Please join us on Thursday October 15, 2020 at 7:30 PM for the first concert of the festival featuring the captivating songs and stories of Cachaça. They will be performing at GigSpace, a beautiful, intimate listening room and one of our favourite venues in which to catch live jazz in Ottawa. Cachaça plays Brazilian music, mostly Bossa Nova, as well as French jazz. They will be joined by percussionist Manuel Andrés Navarro for this special project celebrating one of Rio’s most iconic live music bars in Copacabana, Bip Bip (see the description of the show provided by Cachaça below). Cachaça’s concert video lasts an hour and will be available to pass and ticket holders for a 24-hour viewing period once the video premieres at 7:30 PM EDT. So if you’re tuning in from a different time zone or if you can’t make it for the live broadcast, you can catch the show later.

Hélène Knoerr – vocals and bass
Devon Woods – horns and flute
Pierre Monfils – guitar
Manuel Andrés Navarro – percussion

Three Days in the Life of Bip Bip
“If you are in Rio de Janeiro and looking for Brazilian music at its most authentic, the place to go is the Bip Bip Bar (pronounced Bipi Bipi by the Cariocas). This hidden gem, on a small street off Copacabana Beach, doesn’t look like much from the outside – a tiny storefront with no distinguishing features except for a plaque. Crowds gather on the sidewalk outside because the tables inside are reserved for the musicians. The owner, Alfredo Jacinto Mello, aka Alfredinho, a notorious left-wing activist, purchased the place in 1988 and turned it into “a bar at the service of friendship”. Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes were patrons, and talented musicians from Rio and around the world participate in the nightly themed jam sessions – chorinho on Mondays and Tuesdays, bossa nova on Wednesdays and samba Thursday through Sunday. This is not a place to go and chat with friends: Alfredinho’s wrath falls upon anyone talking during a performance. And because of the neighbours, applause is not tolerated, only finger snapping! Alfredinho passed away in 2018 and this show is an homage to an extraordinary man, an extraordinary place and our favourite music.”
