Merrickville’s Jazz Fest (MJF), a weekend long event annually presented on the weekend following Thanksgiving, is a community sponsored and volunteer run festival offering a variety of jazz programming delivered by emerging, mid-career and senior jazz musicians.
MJF was a brain child of two local community-minded jazz enthusiasts, the first being held in 2011. Along with growing attendance, early recognition for excellence by Ottawajazzscene.ca encouraged its continued growth. MJF is an informal nonprofit organization with a history of donating funds to support music appreciation for youth in the community.
MJF underwent some major changes last fall with the founding Director, Peggy Holloway; Artistic Director, Karen Oxorn and Webmaster Richard Holloway stepping down after six successful seasons. We wish them the very best in future endeavours and thank them for their contribution to the festival and the Merrickville community.
MJF uses a variety of venues for performances from the century old stone churches to a local ballroom, restaurants or pubs where you can enjoy a bite to eat along with a cold one while you listen to fabulous jazz. In between shows you can stroll amid stores and boutiques whose proprietors provide the much appreciated sponsorship and other forms of support.
MJF is proud to be an independent cultural activity organized by a devoted team of volunteers committed to bringing great jazz performances to Merrickville. Festival-goers comment on the friendliness of our volunteers and the charm of the village while applauding the overall calibre, variety, originality and uniqueness of the artists; musicians love it too.
Preparations for the 8th season of Merrickville’s Jazz Fest are now well underway.
It takes the village to run Merrickville’s Jazz Fest. See you there!
